In a previous post, we got into the what and why of visual thinking. You now know that visual thinking isn’t just about making things “look pretty” (although that counts too!), it’s a powerful way to simplify complex ideas, spark engagement, and make information more accessible and make sure it actually sticks. And here’s the fun part, you don’t need to be “artsy” to do this!
That’s right. If you can draw a stick figure and a few shapes, which I believe we all did at some point in our childhoods, you’re already halfway there. Visual thinking isn’t about making perfect art, it’s about making sense.
Whether you’re a facilitator, educator, advocate, or policy wonk, I bet you already think visually, you just may not realize it yet. Those stick figures in your notebook? That messy flowchart during your last team meeting? All valid. Visual thinking is about clarity, not perfection.

The Benefits Go Beyond the Page
When you start applying simple visuals, you’ll notice:
- Faster comprehension: People “get it” quicker when ideas are visual. So many “AHA!” moments
- Better memory: Visuals anchor information in our brains more effectively than text alone.
- Stronger engagement: Whether it’s a workshop, pitch, or campaign, visuals grab attention. And, I mean, attention span is a big problem, no?
- Inclusive communication: Visuals cross language barriers and make information more accessible to diverse audiences. Even when participants don’t speak the same language, visuals can bring them all to one common understanding.
It’s not magic (okay, it kinda is), it’s just a much more fun, engaging, and memorable way to communicate. And you can start today!
