A hands-on course on graphic recording and visual facilitation

This course is for trainers, facilitators, coaches, and teachers, who want to make meetings, ideas, and information more engaging using simple visuals. It’s also for creative souls who want to try out graphic recording as a career path. You don’t need to be an artist, and you definitely don’t need any fancy tools, just curiosity and a willingness to try.

Visual Thinking Foundations with The Doodling Lawyer

is a 10-week, small-group course designed for facilitators, trainers, team leads, and curious creatives who want to use visual thinking to support learning, collaboration, and clarity. It’s also for anyone exploring graphic recording as a possible career path.

If you’ve ever thought, “I can’t draw, but I wish I could explain things more clearly,” this course was made for you.

Visual Thinking Foundations will run from 9th March – 15th May 2026.

What this course is about

Visual thinking is all about the art of listening well, spotting patterns, and turning conversations into visuals that people will understand and remember.

In this course, you’ll learn how to:

      • Think visually, even when ideas feel messy
      • Use simple shapes, icons, and text to explain complex topics
      • Listen for key points and capture them clearly
      • Structure visuals for meetings, workshops, and presentations
      • Bring people to a common understanding through visuals
      • Understand what graphic recording is and how to start doing it professionally

Every week builds on the last, so by the end you’ll have a solid foundation and a growing body of work.

Is this course for me?

This course is a good fit if you are:

        • A facilitator, trainer, or educator who wants more engaging sessions
        • A team lead or manager who wants to run meetings that people will enjoy
        • A communicator working in policy, advocacy, or development spaces
        • A curious creative exploring graphic recording as a skill or career
        • Someone who loves clarity and learning, but has never considered themselves artistic

You don’t need prior drawing experience. If you can write, you can learn this.

How the course works

The course runs over 10 weeks and is designed to fit around real life and real work.

Learning format:

        • 10 modules over 10 weeks
        • Pre-recorded videos and activities released weekly so you can fit it into your schedule
        • One live 60-minute session every Saturday to walk through the week’s activities and and answer any questions
        • One practical project each week, submitted for feedback
        • 1:1 feedback sessions with the course instructor, booked on demand
        • A small cohort size for maximum personalization
        • One final cohort meet-up in Nairobi that doubles as a graduation party (yaay!)
        • A certificate and a small graduation gift to mark the milestone

This is a hands-on course, where you’ll be drawing from week one and building confidence step by step. The small cohort size also means you’ll get personalized feedback, space to ask questions, and time to grow at your own pace.

What next after graduation?

Learning doesn’t stop when the course ends. After graduation, you’ll be part of  The Doodling Lawyer’s Gang, where you’ll enjoy:

        • Lifetime access to a private members’ community where we’ll share tips and tricks of the trade
        • Opportunities to practise in real meetings and sessions to build confidence and a portfolio
        • Amplification of your work on social media
        • Bonus for those interested in a graphic recording career: The opportunity to join Thinkillustrate as a contracted graphic recorder, subject to availability and fit

Meet your instructor

Hi, I’m Jackie Wahome, a.k.a The Doodling Lawyer.

I work at the intersection of law, civic education, and visual storytelling. I use simple drawings to help people understand policies, programmes, and public interest issues. Over the years, I’ve supported organizations, facilitators, and communities to communicate more clearly using visuals.

I have also personally trained three graphic recorders so far who went on to build successful graphic recording businesses, and you could be the next one!

I believe visual thinking is a skill anyone can learn. I also believe creativity can be practical, useful, and impactful.

In this course, I’ll be teaching you exactly how I work, with honesty, encouragement, and plenty of room to ask questions.

FAQs

Do I need to know how to draw to take this course?

No. This course is about thinking visually, not drawing realistically. You’ll work with simple shapes, icons, and text to capture ideas clearly. If you can draw a circle and a line, you’re good to go.

Is this course only for aspiring graphic recorders?

Not at all. While the course is a great starting point for people exploring graphic recording as a career, it’s also designed for professionals who want to use visual thinking in meetings, workshops, teaching, or everyday work.

What tools do I need to participate?

You can complete the entire course with pen, paper, and markers. The course will include direction on how to select the right materials. Gigital tools like a tablet/ iPad are optional. The focus is on building your visual thinking skills, not equipment.

How much time do I need to commit each week?

Plan for about 1–2 hours per week to watch the lessons and do the exercises. You can move at your own pace within each week.

Will I create work I can actually use?

Yes. By the end of the course, you’ll have several finished visual pieces you can use in your work, share online, or include in a beginner portfolio. The emphasis is on practical application, not theory.

How do payments and access to the course work?

Once you register, you’ll receive an email with payment details and next steps. Access to the course materials is granted after payment is confirmed. All lessons are delivered online, so you can join from anywhere.

What happens after I complete the course?

After the course, you’ll have a solid foundation in visual thinking and a visual vocabulary you can build on. You’ll also have a clearer sense of how to use these skills in your work or how to continue developing toward graphic recording projects, facilitation, or further training.
